For the past three months, I have been an SEO Intern at Wetpaint (that’s search engine optimization for you uninitiated). As my summer internship draws to a close, I thought it would be fitting to reflect upon my experiences here and wax reminiscent about what it’s like to work for one of the most promising Web 2.0 companies around.
It has been a fun and challenging ride, but now that it’s nearly over, there are really three things that summarize my time here at Wetpaint.
Hit the jump to read more about why it totally rocks to be a Wetpaint intern.
The people
I was told on the phone that my Wetpaint interview was going to be a couple of hours long, but I didn’t linger on it too much. I didn’t know it at the time, but the long interview process was merely a reflection of the value that Wetpaint places on finding the right people for the job – not just in terms of skills or experience, but also personality and character.
Since my interview three months ago, Wetpaint employees have never stopped being welcome and honest with me. These are people with personality; silly, smart, and fun, they make coming to work worthwhile and enjoyable. I can only hope that when I enter the enigmatic “real world,” it is filled with people like this.
The work
When my friends see the work that I do, they don’t really understand it. Alicia, why are you collecting dozens of shirtless pictures of famous actors? Alicia, why do you spend so much time on that Miley Cyrus site? Sorry guys, can’t talk now, I’ve got to look up dirty jokes about blondes.
I understand that the work I do is valuable, which is why I try so hard to do a good job. I get to work on fun, random projects that get sent my way, and I know that my individual work will have a positive impact on my team and my company. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I get to work on sites like Twilight and Ugly Fugly.
The opportunities
Although working at Wetpaint has been an amazing experience, I know that this is just the beginning. I have learned a great deal about search engine optimization, online marketing, social networking, and the innerworkings of a true Web 2.0 company. All these things will help me as I continue with my education and eventually move on to a professional career.
But the really great thing about Wetpaint is that the people here are all about relationships, so if and when I choose to move on, I know that I will already have a strong network of professionals at my disposal because of my time here.
